As soon as school was over, little deer Kira ran at full pelt to her grandmother’s home. Granny was not only Kira’s favorite person in the whole world, she was also a great enchantress. “Granny, my whole class is going on vacation to the North Pole, would you please conjure up the warmest of scarves for me?”, Kira happily asked. “Of course, sweetheart”, Granny replied, “But I have to warn you, magical items are not eternal! The magic gradually wears off, and once the magic is gone, the items simply vanish into thin air. I’m very old now, sweetheart, I’m not sure I have enough power left to make a magic scarf that would last long. How about crocheting a real scarf together? It would not disappear, for sure!”. “Oh no, Granny”, Kira said, shaking her head, “I don’t need it to last long. A magic scarf will be just fine you know, I’m sure I’ll be back home before the magic goes away”, the little deer replied with conviction. “Well, as you wish, sweetie”, Granny said with a smile. She flicked her hand and conjured up a warm and nice scarf, that she tenderly wrapped around Kira’s neck.
Kira loved the North Pole, there were so many things to do! She ice-skated, ran across snowy landscapes, and marveled at the Northern Lights, that she was seeing for the first time. Everything was beyond amazing, but suddenly, Kira felt freezing cold. She touched her neck and felt that there was no longer any scarf around it…
When she came back home, Kira immediately ran to see her grandmother. “Granny, Granny!”, Kira shouted excitedly, when she saw her standing on the porch. “How are you, sweetheart? Did you have fun? And what about your scarf, I don’t see it!” “Oh, Granny, you were right, it vanished”, Kira confessed sheepishly. “Do you want another magic scarf?”, Granny asked softly, hugging the little deer. “No, Granny, I don’t want magic scarves anymore, never ever, I felt so cold when it disappeared! I want a real one, that will always keep me warm and never disappear. Let’s crochet it together, please!”, Kira quickly said.
“Well, sweetheart, now you know that real handmade things are more reliable than those that are made with the help of magic”, Granny sagely said, hugging Kira in a soft warm hug.
